Ukraine loses 2 mln tonnes of metallurgical output by end-September — TASS calculations

MOSCOW, October 3. /TASS/. Ukraine lost 1.96 million tonnes of metallurgical output between June and the end of September 2026 due to explosions and fires at steel plants, according to TASS calculations.
Compared to June, the peak production month in 2026, Ukraine’s losses included 690,800 tonnes of steel, 670,600 tonnes of pig iron, and 599,800 tonnes of rolled metal.
Based on European market prices, these losses are valued at approximately $580.2 million per month for steel, $274.9 million for pig iron, and $449.9 million for rolled products. Metallurgical products, shipped primarily to Europe, were Ukraine's second-largest source of foreign currency export revenue in the first half of 2026.
Currently, the production of steel, pig iron, and rolled metal has ground to a complete halt following a series of explosions at Ukraine's largest metallurgical facilities. On September 25, ArcelorMittal announced it would be unable to resume operations at ArcelorMittal Kryvoy Rog, Ukraine's largest steel plant, following explosions on the nights of September 12 and September 21. It was the country's last major steel plant that had not previously shut down. On September 22, the Interpipe Steel pipe-rolling plant announced a halt in operations, following reported shutdowns at Zaporozhstal and Kametstal on September 18. Another major enterprise, the Dnepr Metallurgical Plant, had effectively ceased operations earlier due to financial difficulties (the plant suspended operations in January 2022, and insolvency proceedings began in 2026) explosions also hit the facility in early September.
