Brazilian senator leads incumbent by 1.87 percentage points — election authority

RIO DE JANEIRO, October 6. /TASS/. Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro finished 1.87 percentage points ahead of incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the first round of the country’s presidential election, according to data released by the Superior Electoral Court, which serves as Brazil’s central electoral authority, after 100% of the votes had been counted.

Bolsonaro secured 56,104,503 votes, or 47.03% of the total, while Lula da Silva received 53,879,538 votes, or 45.16%. The conservative opposition candidate finished nearly 2.225 million votes ahead of the incumbent.

Lula outperformed Bolsonaro in only 39 of the 645 municipalities in Sao Paulo, the country’s most populous state.

The other ten candidates received a combined 7.81% of valid votes. Writer Augusto Cury finished third with 2.89%, or 3,448,569 votes. Far-right activist Renan Santos placed fourth with 2.24%, or 2,675,887 votes, followed by former Goias Governor Ronaldo Caiado with 2.18%, or 2,605,148 votes. Former Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema received 0.27%, or 326,488 votes. Candidates from small and far-left movements divided the remaining fractions of a percentage point among themselves.
