Trump seemingly concedes there’s some ‘BAD’ in the industry with announcement of ‘AI Force’

President Donald Trump announced plans to create an “AI Force” on social media Saturday, an apparent concession to critics of the emerging technology that the president has defended in recent weeks.

Trump, in a lengthy Truth Social post, said he was forming the government body and would also soon name an AI czar to lead it. David Sacks, who currently chairs the president’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, was AI czar until earlier this year. Trump offered few details about what the organization would look like, what powers it would have or whether its creation would need congressional approval.

But Trump made clear that he envisions some role for the federal government in monitoring the technology for potential danger.

“We will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform. “For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term.”

The proposal marks a notable wrinkle in the plans set forth by an administration that has spent much of the past week pushing back against government oversight of artificial intelligence and calls to slow its progress.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the planned AI Force or where it might function within the federal government.

Americans have grown increasingly nervous at the prospect of AI bringing about the destruction of humanity, with even some in the industry describing major security risks and its leaders joining the call for a slowdown in development of the technology. Likely Democratic presidential contenders — and a bipartisan slate of candidates for governor across the country — are coming to the fore with their own solutions.

Meanwhile, Trump has rejected calls to slow the development, arguing that pumping the brakes could jeopardize the U.S. edge over China in a critical emerging technological frontier.

In the same Saturday Truth Social post announcing the “AI Force,” the president labeled those concerns “hoaxes” perpetuated by “Radical Left Dumocrats, for purposes of destroying our Country.” And he praised AI, saying his administration would not “hinder or stifle” the “incredible” industry.

“We will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!” he wrote in the Truth Social post.
