President Donald Trump said Monday he is considering firing U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle following reports that she pushed a donor to pay off a six-figure credit card bill.
“We’re looking at it,” he told reporters Monday at the White House when asked if he was considering dismissing the diplomat. “We’re not happy.”
The ambassador is in the hot seat over reporting in the Wall Street Journal last week that she pushed a Republican donor to pay off a $100,000 American Express bill as she was also promising access to senior Trump administration officials. A lawyer for Guilfoyle disputed the authenticity of the messages obtained by the Journal and said she was owed money for pre-nomination speaking gigs, which the donor denied.
The State Department, which oversees embassies, did not immediately respond to a request about the president’s latest comments on Guilfoyle’s future.
Guilfoyle’s tenure in Athens has roiled domestic politics there, including previous reporting from the Journal about potential conflicts of interest from an adviser who is also an energy lobbyist as well as with reported clashes with Greek officials.
Guilfoyle is a former Fox News host, who was previously married to California Gov. Gavin Newsom and was once engaged to the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.
Senate Foreign Services ranking member Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) has called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was with Guilfoyle in Athens last week, to investigate the allegations.
Rubio refused to address the allegations during that trip to Athens but did call Guilfoyle a “strong ambassador.”
