Sacks: Trump cutting through panic over AI

Former Trump AI czar David Sacks blamed public alarm around risks that artificial intelligence may post to human existence on a public fear mongering campaign.
He praised Donald Trump’s approach to the issue, saying at POLITICO’s Decoded Summit in D.C. that the president “is unique in his ability as a leader to basically say, ‘No, this is not true. This is a hoax.’ And this actually creates the space to then dissect the narrative and find out all the ways in which it is flawed.”
Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday, “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX, no different from RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA — UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #1 — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #2 — and all of the other HOAXES and SCAMS that America was forced to endure.”
As the public grows increasingly concerned about the risks the rapidly developing technology may pose to human existence, Sacks pointed the finger at the media, saying it stems from “a media op to make the American public afraid of AI.”
Sacks also endorsed former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan’s recent assertions that existing products liability laws could address many of the concerns with AI safety. “
He further expressed agreement with Khan’s emphasis on enforcing antitrust laws to prevent AI companies from gaining too much power. “Lina Khan, the former Democrat FTC Chair, just came out with a statement saying that unsafe AI products are subject to product liability,” said Sacks. “I agree with that.”
But he opened the door to additional regulation. “I’m open to ideas about what else we should have,” Sacks said, later noting that he supports audits and transparency measures.
