Russia opposes new ‘Western seats’ on UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, September 26. /TASS/. Western countries are "overrepresented" on the UN Security Council, which should be expanded to include more representatives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, while Moscow cannot allow any new "Western seats," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the press conference following his remarks at the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

"We cannot provide for or allow any new 'Western seats,' because the West is already overrepresented," Lavrov stressed, adding that reform must not include additional seats for Western countries, "especially Germany and Japan, which have embarked on a path of militarization and revanchism."

He reiterated support for permanent seats for Brazil and India while meeting Africa's interests in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration.
