First Lady Melania Trump skipped out on her husband’s GOP’s midterm convention to discuss the redesign going on at the White House.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump flew to Dallas to participate in the Republican Party’s rally conference ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Melania stayed behind in Washington, D.C., to participate in the White House Historical Association’s Presidential Sites Summit.
The event is a three-day conference focused on “lessons learned, future collaborations, and strategies for sustaining relevance in a dynamic cultural landscape,” the Daily Beast reports.
The first lady gave a speech at the event titled “The White House: America’s Architectural Autobiography,” where she described the presidential residence as “an architectural autobiography of America, embodying the enduring values of ambition, democracy, and civic life through its design, craftsmanship, and the objects within.” She suggested during the speech that the decorating decisions at the White House ultimately color Americans’ national identity.
The Trump family has faced criticism for its changes to the White House – ranging from calls of ‘tacky’ for the gold accents placed in many rooms to the president’s massive construction projects such as his ballroom.
open image in gallery“Design is a meticulous process that involves a multitude of choices—each line, texture and play of natural light contributes to an overarching narrative. No detail is too small; what may seem insignificant today can influence how individuals connect with one another and perceive their place in history,” Melania said. “Within the walls of the White House, these experiences become essential to our national identity.”
What she did not mention, at least not directly, is that her husband knocked down the East Wing so he could build a combo ballroom and drone base in its place. She also did not mention that the president paved over the Rose Garden lawn to install a patio, or that he tore up the South Lawn for a helipad.
The first lady, meanwhile, said that she uncovered hidden wallpaper in the Presidential Dining Room and made renovations to the White House Tennis Pavilion during her first term.
She noted that her tennis pavilion work was “in collaboration with the Trust for the National Mall, the Executive Residence, and the National Park Service, and approved by the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, the Commission of Fine Arts, and the National Capital Planning Commission in 2018. Every detail was thoughtfully considered to ensure the new structure harmonized with the historic neoclassical character of the White House Grounds.”
That happy partnership with historical preservation groups is a boast that she does not share with her husband.
open image in galleryThe National Trust for Historic Preservation sued to halt construction on the ballroom. The Supreme Court ruled against the group last month, allowing construction to continue at the site.
Despite the fact that her husband has been tearing up the White House lawns and thrashing around Washington, D.C., with his various projects and vendettas — his abysmal Reflecting Pool renovation, the now-shuttered Kennedy Center, the signs outside the Smithsonian museums warning visitors that the museum is too woke — the first lady emphasized the importance of being a good steward of the White House.
“As stewards of the places shaped by those before us, we are tasked with making decisions that honor future generations,” she said. “It is our duty to ensure that the choices we make today are worthy of the legacy we pass forward.”
The Independent has requested comment from the White House.
