Lavrov says Guterres’ team promotes double standards, serves Western interests

UNITED NATIONS, September 26. /TASS/. The current UN Secretariat, headed by Antonio Guterres, is failing to uphold the UN Charter, promoting double standards, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a news conference following his participation in the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Moscow wants the UN to genuinely become a center for coordinating the interests of all states, as required by its Charter, the foreign minister said.

"The organization’s Secretariat could certainly make a constructive contribution here. But the current team headed by Antonio Guterres is unable to implement the key requirements of this document, which underpins the entire UN. It promotes biased approaches and double standards, essentially serving a group of Western countries," Lavrov said, noting that seven or eight of the most important positions in the UN Secretariat are held by citizens or nationals of NATO countries.
