Iran is not holding any negotiations with US — ambassador to Russia

MOSCOW, September 22. /TASS/. Iran is not holding negotiations with the US and views the relevant statements by US President Donald Trump as an attempt to lower energy prices ahead of the Congressional elections, Iranian ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali has said.

"There is no sincerity in the actions or words of American officials. Therefore, we regularly articulate our position on this matter at the level of the President, the Foreign Minister, and the Foreign Ministry spokesman. No negotiations are currently taking place," Jalali told a news conference.

According to him, "contradictions are constantly heard in the US President's statements: at the start of the conflict, he declared the overthrow of Iran's political system as his goal, but that objective failed."

"Then he set out to seize Iranian oil fields, but failed to achieve that as well. Later, he announced plans to destroy Iran's nuclear and missile infrastructure, but he did not succeed in that, either. Recently, Trump claimed that the US had destroyed Iran and that it no longer exists. If you have destroyed Iran, why do you continue to threaten it?" Jalali asked.

"You know why Trump plays these media games. He is trying to balance energy prices; this is particularly important ahead of the US Congressional elections," the Iranian ambassador believes.

Earlier, speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump expressed confidence that the United States and Iran would conclude a peace agreement shortly after the midterm Congressional elections in early November.
