Europe’s militarized Arctic strategy will only cause EU isolation — Russian diplomats

BRUSSELS, October 21. /TASS/. The European Union’s new militarized strategy in the Arctic is aimed at military escalation in this peaceful region, but will only cause further isolation of the EU, Russia’s permanent mission to the bloc said.

"Interest for the Arctic region has been declared, for the first time, primarily in light of Brussels’ geopolitical ambitions, citing a mythical threat from Russia and China, and also in the context of what EU officials view as unreliable partners, clearly against the backdrop of last year’s discussion over the sovereignty over Greenland," the Russian mission said. "This is about the EU preparing to escalate the situation in the Arctic, pitting its own interests against cooperation priorities of the Arctic states and international cooperation as a whole."

"Given these confrontational approaches, which align with a general course towards the bloc’s militarization and confrontation with Russia, one should expect that such policy of Brussels, against the backdrop of already destroyed multilateral cooperation formats in northern Europe, will lead only to the European Union’s isolation in Arctic affairs," Russian diplomats added.
