The Philadelphia police officer who failed to help before the fatal hit-and-run will be fired, officials said

A Philadelphia police officer used his foot to nudge a man lying in the street — and then left him there and drove off — just before a car fatally hit the man.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said Monday that the officer has been suspended for 30 days, and that they plan to fire him after, WPVI reported.
“All of us, whether you’re a Philadelphia police officer, or you can be an officer on the other side of the country, have a duty to follow an officer’s code of ethics,” Bethel said.
“In those ethics, we specifically describe, ‘My fundamental duty is to serve the community and safeguard the lives and property.’ He did not do that on that day and as a result of that, he has been given 30 days to dismissal from the police department.”
Authorities have not named the officer, but said he has been with the department for two years.
The officer approached Eugene Beauford, 48, around 1:40 a.m. of August 27, driving up alongside him as he walked unsteadily along the bike lane of a road. Video showed Bueaford staggering along the road.
As the two talked, Beauford fell, prompting the officer to exit his vehicle.
Video obtained by NBC 10 showed the officer coming up to the prone Beauford and standing over him. The officer then used his foot to nudge the man. The cop returned to his vehicle and drove away from Beauford, who remained on the ground.
Another person later walked over and spoke with Beauford, who was lying between the street and bike lane. That bystander eventually walked away, as Beauford was still on the ground.
Less than five minutes later, a green Kia entered the bike lane to pass another vehicle and hit Beauford, the video showed. The car quickly drove off.
Both the initial bystander and another person later moved Beauford to the curb and called 911. Emergency responders — including the cop who initially approached Beauford — arrived at the scene.
That same officer failed to provide Beauford with aid once again. Authorities also said he failed to file a police report after the horrifying incident.
Beauford was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Police officials said they only learned of the fatality after the department was contacted by the medical examiner’s office.
“We live by a code of ethics, and we have to be driven by that each and every day if we want to do this job properly,” Bethel said. “I felt disgusted.”
The green Kia involved in the hit-and-run and its driver have been located, authorities said. No arrest or charges have been announced.
