AfD parliamentary group calls for blocking Ukraine’s EU, NATO accession

BERLIN, September 25. /TASS/. The parliamentary group of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has called on the German authorities to prevent Ukraine from joining the European Union and refrain from providing military guarantees to Kiev in a resolution, according to the Bundestag website.

"Ukraine must never become a member of NATO, Ukraine must never become a member of the EU, and Germany must never commit to providing military assistance to Ukraine," Markus Frohnmaier, deputy head of the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, said.

AfD lawmakers said that extending the provision on assistance under Article 42 of the Treaty on European Union to Ukraine would risk involving Germany in a conflict with Russia. The resolution calls for rejecting even "associated membership" for Ukraine in the EU or similar forms of integration and, all the more, ruling out its full membership in the European Union.

The lawmakers believe that the focus should be solely on a "privileged partnership" with Kiev and, for example, that Ukrainian goods should be granted access to the EU internal market provided they comply with European standards. The AfD parliamentary group also believes that Germany should not allocate funds for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

After a 20-minute debate on the resolution, the document was referred to parliamentary committees for further discussion.
