The Republican running for Colorado governor has addressed past comments he made about slamming his wife into a door, saying she was “fake crying” and that he would “do it again.”

Victor Marx, a 61-year-old Marine veteran and ministry leader, first recounted the violent episode in a 2021 podcast interview unearthed by The Daily Beast last month. In the clip, he said he became angry after his wife told him that she didn’t need martial arts training.

“She goes, ‘I can handle myself’. I said, ‘You can?’ And I remember grabbing her, slamming her into our front door,” Marx said. “I mean, it was a decent push. It’d be a bouncing push, right? She hit that, bent over and started crying, facing the opposite way.”

Marx, who faces an uphill battle to win in November, described uproar over the episode as “the dumbest thing” in a Tuesday meeting online with supporters, according to footage obtained by 9News.

“Show the before and after,” he said. “They don’t want the full truth: that my wife was fake crying, suckered me in. And I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, are you okay?’ And she does a spin back kick in my luggage. I was like, ‘Okay, you actually can protect yourself.”

His wife then appeared in the frame, wrapped her arm around his neck and said: “I did a weird choke.”

“I mean, people have called us the real Mr. and Mrs. Smith — black belts, training,” Marx continued. “How many wives, you know, actually grab a backpack, put a tomahawk, night vision, put a grenade in their coat pocket? We’re not normal. So I’d do it again. I’d do everything again, except get that close to her and let her kick me, because she’s sneaky. So, it’s just nuts.”

After 9 News reporter Kyle Clark posted footage of the Zoom call on social media, Marx responded by thanking him for “putting the story in context.”

“Let me know if you ever want to come down and train,” he added. “I’m sure that would be a segment that could get you plenty of clicks and views, champ.”

The GOP nominee, who has been endorsed by Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, has previously spoken out about his own self-described history of violence.

According to The Daily Beast, he once described throwing his toddler son “across the room” after the child pushed his daughter.

He also claimed that, when he was seven years old, his step-father took him to Mississippi and made him kill a man. Investigators have said no evidence of such a crime has been uncovered, the Times reported. He has also said that Jesus endowed him with “supernatural” powers to free those who “may be oppressed by forces of darkness or demons.”

Marx will face off against state Attorney General and Democratic Party nominee Phil Weiser in the election next month. The winner will replace Democratic Governor Jared Polis who cannot seek a third term. Colorado has not elected a GOP governor since 2002.

Marx has said affordability and public safety are among his top issues, telling a local newspaper this week that, if elected, he would “focus resources on violent and repeat offenders.”
