U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Mumbai, on Tuesday (October 20, 2026). He is set to meet government and business leaders during his two-day visit to India.

After landing in Mumbai, Mr. Rubio and his wife, Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, visited the Gateway of India with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

He is set to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace. Mr. Rubio’s visit comes just after the deadline for U.S. President Donald Trump to decide on imposing tariffs as sanctions for the purchase of Russian oil by countries, including India.

Mr. Jaishankar is hosting his counterparts from the UAE and the U.S. in Mumbai in two separate meetings to discuss India’s bilateral relations with the two strategic partners, as well as regional issues and ongoing conflicts in West Asia.

Mr. Rubio and Mr. Jaishankar will then attend celebrations of the 250th anniversary of American Independence. This is the second time Mr. Jaishankar will be the guest of honour at U.S. Embassy events for the 250th anniversary, after he attended a celebration in New Delhi in May.

On Wednesday (October 21, 2026), he will depart from Mumbai for Jamnagar to see the Reliance energy refinery and the Vantara animal facility, hosted by the Ambani family that officials termed a “private visit”.
