President Donald Trump has requested the resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, amid reports that she urged a donor seeking White House access to pay off a $100,000 credit card bill while preparing for her confirmation hearing before the Senate last year.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Katie Zacharia, the president’s new press secretary, told reporters in a Tuesday press briefing. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”
Guilfoyle, the one-time fiancée of Donald Trump Jr, the president’s oldest son, has come under heavy scrutiny in recent days, after a Wall Street Journal report last week revealed communications with Eric Deters, a Republican donor who said she urged him to wire her the money through American Express.
News of the former Fox News host’s dismissal came less than a day after the president told the press he was weighing her ouster.
“We’re looking at it,” he said outside the White House on Monday. “We’re not happy.”
