STOCKHOLM, September 19. /TASS/. The United States, Denmark, and Greenland plan to sign an agreement next week on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, the Danish Prime Minister's office announced on Friday.
"I am glad that we are about to make a great agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the United States. An agreement which strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic Area and therefore is great for NATO and Europe as well. And an agreement which at the same time recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement.
Following the signature, the agreement must undergo the necessary national parliamentary procedures before entering into force.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States, Denmark, and Greenland have entered into an agreement granting Washington permanent control over the island's security.
