SIMFEROPOL, October 1. /TASS/. Financing Ukraine is becoming increasingly burdensome for the European Union, as it is becoming harder for European countries to meet Kiev’s financial needs, Alexander Irkhin, Doctor of Political Sciences and professor at Vernadsky Crimean Federal University, told TASS.

"Europe is gradually realizing that its own resources in the conflict in Ukraine are limited. Another aspect is becoming apparent: Ukraine, as a project for waging war against Russia, is becoming too costly to maintain. The longer the conflict continues, the higher Ukraine’s costs become, and covering them is becoming financially unprofitable for Europeans. Eventually, they will either decide that the conflict needs to end or enter it directly," the expert said.

Earlier, Le Monde quoted an unnamed European diplomat as describing attempts to meet Ukraine’s financial needs with European funds as "watering the desert," while commenting on Kiev’s latest request for financial assistance. According to the French newspaper, Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergey Marchenko said during his latest visit to Brussels on Monday that an additional 69 billion euros would be needed for 2027.

The figure already takes into account the EU’s promised 90 billion euros in aid for 2026-2027, as well as support under bilateral agreements between Kiev and its partners.
