From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. President Donald Trump said he felt “badly” for the seven men accused of gang-raping a young woman at Cornell University after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday appointed state Attorney General Letitia James to take over the investigation.
James successfully prosecuted Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records, a felony, in a case which ended months before Trump was re-elected in 2024. On Friday, the president spoke to reporters before departing the White House for Mobile, Alabama and was asked by Fox’s Peter Doocy about the New York case.
“Well, Letitia James is a corrupt person. She’s totally corrupt and I can’t imagine it, I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because she won’t get a fair shake,” said Trump.
This is a breaking story
