President Donald Trump lashed out at the Supreme Court, including three justices he appointed to the bench, after they rejected his efforts to overhaul mail-in ballot voting just weeks before midterm elections.
In a lengthy post on his Truth Social account on Tuesday, the president criticized the nation’s high court for a series of rulings against his administration, including his sweeping tariff agenda and unilateral attempt to rewrite the 14th Amendment to strip birthright citizenship from certain newborns.
“This Supreme Court is bullied and cajoled by the Radical Left into making decisions that have set America back at least a hundred years,” the president wrote Tuesday.
He added: “These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves, a Court that is costing the United States Trillions of Dollars with shockingly bad rulings that are of such magnitude that it won’t be easily possible for our Country to recover or heal.”
On Monday night, the Supreme Court rejected the president’s request to reverse court rulings against his mail-in ballot rules, allowing states to continue distributing ballots using long-standing procedures that account for tens of millions of votes cast.
Monday’s decision — supported by Trump appointees Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch — effectively prevents the administration from requiring states to implement a standardized envelope design and submit lists of eligible voters through an online portal.
The U.S. Postal Service would then be allowed to refuse delivery of mail-in ballots from any state that failed to comply with these rules.
Two conservative justices, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, publicly dissented.
Kavanaugh, however, appeared to suggest that he could side with the Trump administration if the dispute returns to the court at another time, outside of the narrow window for states to scramble to implement the changes before Election Day.
The ruling delivers a major blow to Trump’s attempts to centralize control of the nation’s elections, giving the postal agency expansive authority to decide who gets to vote in an unprecedented shakeup of election administration.
“The Supreme Court has really let our Country down!” Trump wrote Tuesday. “Certain Justices are petrified of these crazed and depraved Democrats, and are totally unable to show the courage necessary to save our America.”
He called the court’s decision-making an “irreparable and unrecoverable harm” that “will go down, in a very negative way, in the annals of History.”
The president said this Supreme Court, dominated by a conservative majority that has handed the president a series of victories with far-reaching consequences, will instead “go down as having rendered some of the most destructive, hurtful, and damaging decisions in our Country’s history.”
“It is not easy for me to write this criticism of the United States Supreme Court – it will likely cost me dearly for years to come – but I feel it my obligation and duty, as President, to do so for the America we love!” Trump wrote.
The Department of Justice and U.S. Postal Service have argued that the changes are merely standardizing election mail, but election officials across the country have warned that the rules would give the agency unconstitutional authority to interfere in election administration.
Monday’s decision followed a floor of briefs to the court from state election officials, lawmakers, voting rights advocates and even postal workers, who told the justices that forced compliance with Trump’s rules would likely trigger a “catastrophic wholesale non-delivery” of hundreds of thousands of mail ballots.
