From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. President Donald Trump has added the $3.2 billion Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project in Alabama to a long list of things he’d like named after him.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy “helped break ground on the brand new I-10 corridor and bridge project connecting Mobile and Eastern Shore. All made possible by $3 billion dollars in funding from the Trump administration, and we were proud to do it,” Trump said as the crowd at his rally in Mobile roared in excitement Friday night.

“Maybe they’ll name the damn bridge after me,” Trump said. “I’ll be happy.”

Duffy announced last month that state authorities would receive a Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan of $2.52 billion to pay for most of the project. But the Biden administration also awarded a $550 million grant for the project in July 2024, which was finalized under the Trump administration in May 2025.

“I do want to thank the Trump administration for their role in getting us here,” Representative Shomari Figures, an Alabama Democrat, said Friday during a groundbreaking ceremony, local outlet ABC 33/40 reported. “But I would be remiss not to thank the Biden administration as well. The Biden administration made a huge investment in this project — $550 million.”

Trump’s comments come after his name was slapped on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and an airport in his new home state of Florida.

Last December, the Trump-appointed Kennedy Center board voted to put the president’s name on the building.

In May, U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper ordered Trump’s name to be removed from the Kennedy Center, stating, “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.” Weeks later, construction crews were seen taking Trump’s name off the building.

Palm Beach International Airport changed its name to President Donald J. Trump International Airport in July in compliance with a state law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis about three months before.

Trump officials were circulating a list of government sites the president could put his name on, including Ford’s Theatre, where former President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, MS NOW reported last month, citing people familiar with the matter.

But the president called the reporting “fake news.”

“The story that the White House, or me, want to affix my name to Ford’s Theatre, in Washington, D.C., where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, is a ridiculous lie. It is FAKE NEWS! Who would possibly want a name on such a tragic place?” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time.

Trump admitted to New York Magazine’s Ben Terris in an article last month that he is painting D.C. in his image because no one else will do it when he leaves office.

“Nobody will do it once I’m gone. When I leave here, nobody will,” he said.

While in Mobile Friday night, Trump talked about how much he loves Alabama and then boasted about his electoral victories in the deep red state.

“We love Alabama,” Trump told his adoring crowd. “In fact, we love it so much, I’ll be here again next Saturday to watch a football game between Georgia and Alabama.”

“We won the state all three times, all three elections, and we had another very great distinction, and that distinction is we got the highest vote total of any candidate in Alabama history,” Trump said.
