Swedish Academy to announce winner of Nobel Prize in Literature

STOCKHOLM, October 8. /TASS/. The Swedish Academy will announce the winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature at 11:00 a.m. GMT.
According to Alfred Nobel's will, the prize in this category is awarded to the author who demonstrates "excellence in works of an idealistic tendency." What exactly is meant by an "idealistic tendency" remains a subject of debate to this day.
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai "for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art."
According to Swedish experts, the favorites for 2026 include Australian novelist Gerald Murnane, Chinese writer Can Xue, and Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson. Other potential winners include Alexis Wright, an Australian writer of Waanyi descent, American novelist Thomas Pynchon, Japanese wirter Haruki Murakami, American novelist and essayist Marilynne Robinson, French writer Michel Houellebecq, and Antigua and Barbuda-born novelist and essayist Jamaica Kincaid. Other potential winners include French writer, novelist, playwright, and screenwriter Marie NDiaye, whose work explores the status of women in the modern world, her compatriot, writer and songwriter Nina Bouraoui, Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Swiss writer and journalist Christian Kracht.
