Risk of military conflict in Transnistria very high — GFCN expert

MOSCOW, September 30. /TASS/. The risk of Transnistria being drawn into a zone of military conflict remains strong, Romanian blogger and expert at the Global Fact·Checking Network (GFCN) Ioana Jaleel told TASS.

"A conflict in Transnistria is possible. If someone tries to draw the Republic of Moldova or, God forbid, even Romania in war with Russia, they will definitely use Transnistria, because it is a convenient route, especially for Ukraine. And I think it is possible. So I would not rule out the idea of a conflict with Transnistria again," she said.

According to her, there was information on European social media that "in such a situation Romanian troops may also be able to enter in that conflict. But I didn't see anything like this coming from our politicians. They never mentioned anything like this, which is good for the moment but yes, I think that the risk of confrontation is very high," the expert said.

As the analyst noted, "in my country they don't talk much about Transnistria, they are talking only when the mass media in Chisinau is talking about this. They just take the news and publish it in the European media. As a normal Romanian citizen I can tell you that in my country Transnistria is seen as a highly militarized zone controlled by Russia, which is actually the biggest impediment for Moldova to unite with us or to get into the European Union."

Jaleel added that the fake news surrounding this topic is mainly that "the people of Transnistria are not happy with this situation, that they want to reunite with Moldova. But this is absolutely fake, because just in the last period of time, tens of thousands of Transnistrian people applied for Russian citizenship, so it cannot be the case."
