The tech billionaire has reportedly contributed around $366 million to GOP groups during the current election cycle

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has poured more than $276 million into Republican political groups since early July, becoming the largest known donor ahead of next month’s crucial US midterm elections, the New York Times reported on Monday.

The contributions come just weeks before the November 3 vote, which will determine whether Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress.

According to the NYT, Musk donated $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which backs Republican Senate candidates, and $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports House Republicans. The newspaper cited figures provided by Musk’s representatives ahead of a federal disclosure deadline on Thursday.

Another $76 million went to Musk’s America PAC, while $22 million was distributed among other Republican groups, Reuters reported. These organizations, known as super PACs, can raise and spend unlimited sums to support candidates but are prohibited from coordinating directly with their campaigns.

The latest contributions have brought Musk’s total political donations during the 2025–2026 election cycle to approximately $366 million, making the world’s richest person the largest known donor in this year’s congressional races.

“If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country,” the NYT quoted Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for Musk’s America PAC, as saying.

Musk previously spent more than $290 million backing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and other Republican candidates during the 2024 election cycle. The two publicly feuded in 2025 over Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill but have since appeared to reconcile, attending several events together.

Republican political groups had roughly $1 billion available for the midterms, compared with $579 million held by major Democratic organizations, the Associated Press reported last week. Republicans have also been spending heavily to defend traditionally safe seats, according to the news agency.

The elections come amid declining approval ratings for Trump, mounting concerns over living costs and the economic fallout from the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Trump’s approval rating fell to 30% in early October, down from 37% in January, before the US-Israeli attack on Iran in February, according to Pew Research Center polling.
