Simpson Cheung Published: 9:30am, 2 Oct 2026 Companies from the United States , Britain and Singapore have been among the leading sources of inbound foreign capital in Hong Kong so far this year, the city’s commerce minister has said, insisting that “money is money” despite geopolitical instability.

In an exclusive, wide-ranging interview with the South China Morning Post, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah described 2026 as a very challenging year because of the geopolitical situation.

Nevertheless, the government’s investment promotion arm, InvestHK, had helped 516 overseas and mainland Chinese companies set up or expand businesses in the city in the first eight months of the year.

The US and the United Kingdom accounted for 27 and 21 companies, respectively, behind the mainland with 307 and Singapore with 29.
