Kremlin calls Greenland deal ‘a matter for the countries involved’

MOSCOW, September 22. /TASS/. The potential signing of documents concerning Greenland by the island’s leadership, the United States, and Denmark is a matter for the parties involved to decide, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Media reports had previously indicated that an agreement concerning Greenland could be signed on September 22 in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

"As for the possible signing of any documents regarding Greenland, that is a matter for the parties concerned," Peskov said when asked about the Kremlin’s reaction to the reports.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Denmark had reached an agreement under which Washington would assume responsibility for Greenland’s security. He said the US would immediately begin expanding its military presence on the Arctic island.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose country retains sovereignty over Greenland, had previously rejected Trump’s stated intention to gain control of the territory.

Trump has repeatedly argued that bringing Greenland under US control is necessary for national security. During his first presidential term, he proposed purchasing the island. In March 2025, he said he was confident that Greenland could ultimately become part of the United States and threatened Copenhagen with tariffs if Denmark refused.

Following a visit to Washington in January by Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, a working group involving representatives of all three parties was established to discuss issues related to Greenland.
