Japanese PM calls for reform of UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, September 23. /TASS/. Japan believes that the UN Security Council in its current form does not reflect modern realities and should therefore be reformed, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

"The need for urgent reform of the UN Security Council is a crucial issue," she said, stressing the need to increase the number of both permanent and non-permanent members. The Japanese prime minister said the Security Council, which is tasked with maintaining peace and stability, reflects the international situation of 1945 in its current form, rather than today’s realities.

Japan has consistently advocated reform of the UN Security Council for many years.
