IKEA plans to close three of its smaller-format stores across the U.S. as part of a strategy to build a sustainable future, the company said.
The company’s plan is to close its order-with-pickup stores in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., on October 18, while its Annapolis, Maryland, location will shutter October 30. Its Fairfax, Virginia, store is set to close November 30, according to Retail Dive.
The closures are part of a strategy “to build a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future,” the company said.
IKEA plans to continue to expand its home delivery, pick-up services and its digital channels, in order to create even more ways for customers to interact with the brand, according to the report.
The company said customers currently planning projects at shuttered stores can continue working on them at other in-market locations or online with the help of a remote planner.
“Plan and order points with pick-up are new format locations with a smaller footprint, designed to help customers plan big projects like kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, and access convenient pick-up options as part of our broader store network,” the company said. “Each of these locations is situated near another IKEA store.”
Some of the stores set to close only opened within the past few years, with the Georgetown location having opened less than a year ago.
Workers at the shuttering locations will be given the opportunity to relocate to nearby stores in Baltimore; College Park, Maryland; and Woodbridge, Virginia.
The closures appear to be a change from IKEA’s recent strategy of opening smaller format stores.
The company announced plans in 2023 to invest $2.2 billion over three years to strengthen its fulfillment network and open new stores, including nine plan and order locations.
Earlier this year, IKEA also announced plans to open 10 new stores in 2026, including its first location in Oklahoma and its first city-center store in Los Angeles.
