President Trump will attend a summit Thursday meant to empower scientists and position the U.S. as a leader in breakthroughs driven by “super intelligence,” according to an announcement shared first with Axios.
Why it matters: The Trump administration is looking for industry to step in amid its cuts to government funding for science research and development.
Driving the news: The White House is announcing more than $1 billion in industry commitments for the Genesis Mission from AMD, OpenAI, Anthropic and others.
- The White House is also announcing a compute hub of more than 14 institutions across 10 southeast states, and a $1 billion investment in Georgia for student and faculty compute access.
- The National Science Foundation and the Energy Department will invest more than $100 million in AI-driven science tools.
- Leading scientists and “innovators” will attend the summit, the White House says.
Zoom in: The summit was inspired by a July report from White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios.
- It highlights industry’s increasing role in driving research and development, plus new mechanisms for funding and organizing research.
Catch up quick: Trump last November launched the Genesis Mission, which sets ambitious deadlines to accelerate scientific discovery.
- In July, the White House announced that the effort would be expanded to more than 15 federal agencies.
- Last week, the White House held another AI summit that focused on the rollout of America.gov, which aims to streamline government services using AI.
