‘Don’t come here to campaign for me’: Hamilton says Kamala Harris should stay in California ahead of midterms

Kansas Democratic Senate nominee Adam Hamilton is making it very clear who he wants beside him on the campaign trail as the midterm election approaches — and which politicians he hopes stay away.
“People ask me, ‘Should [Kamala Harris] come here and campaign for you?,’” Hamilton said. “Please, no. Don’t come here to campaign for me.”
He added, “I think Harris can stay in California. I mean no disrespect for her. She is not somebody who would win votes here in Kansas.”
In an interview on POLITICO’s “The Conversation” with Dasha Burns, the megachurch pastor explained which Democrats he sees as palatable for Kansans — and which do not jive with the midwest. Alongside Harris, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was also on the “stay away” list.
“They’re perceived to be out of touch with Kansans,” Hamilton said. “They’re perceived to be coastal elites, the East Coast or the West Coast elites.”
Hamilton is not the first Democrat to distance himself from the former vice president. Several other candidates have steered clear of her ahead of the midterms.
In the meantime, Harris has made appearances alongside Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s open Senate seat, and has announced campaign appearances alongside Democrats like Sen. Jon Ossoff in Georgia.
Asked which Democrats he would want to campaign for him, he named Sens. Tim Kaine and Elissa Slotkin.
Hamilton said he is someone who wants to work across the aisle and believes that is what the people of Kansas want.
“In Kansas, if you want somebody who’s gonna crush the Republicans, they will never get elected to the U.S. Senate,” Hamilton said.
“They’re sick and tired of people who are on the edges of the political spectrum, Republican or Democrat, who are in the midst of this zero-sum game where we’re two teams fighting against each other to the death,” he added.
The full conversation with Hamilton will be available Friday at 5am EDT. Watch the full interview on YouTube and listen wherever you get your podcasts.
