Bill Maher predicted that Republican party will suffer a “historical a** whooping” in the November midterm elections due to President Donald Trump’s unpopularity.

The comedian and host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher offered his characteristically blunt assessment during an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday.

Zakaria cited a recent analysis by political analyst Nate Silver suggesting a “blue wave” was likely, then asked Maher what had driven the decline in support for the GOP.

“Trump screwed the pooch, that’s what happened,” replied Maher, who has spent years lampooning the president on air. “He got drunk with power. This is the pattern in this country. Somebody gets elected. They go way too far with their side of things.”

“Biden did it to a degree with ‘wokeness,’ and he was too feeble to fight the far left. The other people get in, and they [do] not just reverse it. We’re going to be shooting people in the street,” Maher said, apparently referring to the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens in Minnesota. “How ‘bout that? He’s lost even a lot of his own people.”

With the midterms just a month away, Maher predicted: “It’s going to be a classic, historical a** whooping.”

Multiple polls indicate that Republicans could indeed be in deep trouble, raising the prospect that the party could lose control of both the House and the Senate. A recent Siena University survey even showed Democratic gubernatorial candidates leading in four red states. Some Republicans, though, have pointed out that polls have been wrong in the past.

But Maher cautioned that the 2028 presidential election could be a “different story.” He described the Democratic Socialists of America, whose candidates have won races across the country, as a “crazy animal” that has become “the energy of the party.”

For now, though, the electorate is focused on Trump, whose approval rating hovers near historic lows, the comedian said.

Voters are saying “right now we have one piece of business in front of us, and that is to let Donald Trump know we don’t like what he did,” Maher said. “He went too far, he didn’t keep his word on the things that were important to us, ranging from Epstein to ‘no wars’ to ‘the economies going to be better,’ inflation, gas prices, all that stuff.

“And this is what we need to register our feelings on in 2026,” he continued. “We’ll get to the other stuff later, perhaps. But right now, we have one message: Donald Trump went too far and his party will pay.”

Maher, who has hosted a late-night show for decades, has a long history of criticizing Trump.

In 2013, responding to Trump’s repeated false claim that Barack Obama was born outside the U.S., Maher joked that Trump was the “spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan.” Trump later sued Maher over the remark.

In the past year, Maher has accused Trump of embracing socialism through his interventions in private businesses; denounced him as an “emperor” staging “gladiatorial games,” a reference to the UFC event at the White House; and described Trump’s followers as part of a “cult.”

Trump, for his part, has frequently lashed out at Maher, calling him “highly overrated” and accusing him of having “a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

The pair had dinner together at the White House in March 2025, a summit brokered by their mutual friend Kid Rock. Afterwards, Maher said the president had been “gracious and measured” and a far cry from the “crazy” man he sees on television.

Maher still carried on criticizing the Trump administration during his Friday night broadcasts.
