Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said his government is committed to ensuring the rights and security of all citizens, irrespective of their religious identity.
Mr. Rahman made the remarks during an exchange of views with Hindu community leaders at his office in the secretariat here on Monday (October 12, 2026), the state-run BSS news agency reported.
"The government is doing its utmost to ensure the rights and security that everyone is entitled to as a citizen of this country, rather than on the basis of religion," he said.
The Prime Minister said ensuring the rights of every citizen was his responsibility as head of government, and that he would "make every effort" within his capacity to fulfil it.
"As citizens of this country and as human beings, you are entitled to certain rights. As head of government, it is my duty to try to ensure those rights," he said.
Mr. Rahman's remarks come amid concerns over the security of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu community, and the need to protect their places of worship and religious gatherings.
According to the 2022 census, Hindus account for 8% (about 13 million) of Bangladesh's nearly 170 million people.
The Prime Minister's assurance also comes amid heightened security by the police across the country ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Bangladesh's Hindu minority.
From round-the-clock surveillance and specialised police units to drones and helicopters for idol immersion, the police have put in place an extensive security apparatus at nearly 33,000 Durga Puja venues across the country to maintain communal harmony during the festival, which will be celebrated from October 16 to 20, 2026.
In previous years, incidents of attacks on Hindu temples and establishments during religious festivities have raised concerns over the safety of minorities and prompted calls for stronger measures to prevent communal violence.
Mr. Rahman said he viewed his position as an opportunity to serve the people and would do his best to protect their rights, regardless of their religious identity.
