15 children rescued after being found in ‘deplorable’ two-bedroom Atlanta-area apartment

Three parents have been arrested after 15 children between the ages of 1 and 17 were found living in allegedly deplorable conditions at an apartment complex in Marietta, Georgia.
Marietta police were called to the apartment last week to conduct a welfare check on the occupants. The welfare check was related to two children reportedly living at the apartment, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
After failing to make contact with an adult living at the apartment, police sought and obtained a search warrant.
Approximately three hours after police arrived at the apartment, 40-year-old Ashley Jackson, 41-year-old Derrick Jackson and 36-year-old Briana Reynolds arrived at the building. The three adults identified themselves as the biological parents of the children living inside.
Once officers received a search warrant, they found that 18 people — three adults and 15 children — were living inside the two-bedroom apartment in conditions police described as “deplorable.”
According to the warrants, the children were not provided with necessary sustenance and their hygienic needs were not met. The documents note that there were no signs of toilet paper present in the apartment, according to ABC 24.
The warrants also claim there was not enough food present to keep the children fed and that there were only 9 beds for the 18 people living in the apartment. It notes that there was allegedly mold growing in several spots, including one of the bedrooms.
Department of Family Services staff gathered the 15 children and relocated them into safe environments, according to the report.
The three adults were taken into custody and transported to the MPD police department for interviewing before formal charges were filed.
Ashley Jackson was charged with first-degree cruelty to children, second-degree cruelty to children, and misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Reynolds and Derrick Jackson are facing the same charges, with Jackson facing an additional charge for allegedly crossing the guard line — a charge typically applied when police find illegal or prohibited items on a detainee after they’ve been taken into custody.
According to the warrant, Derrick Jackson entered the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office jail with marijuana hidden in his rectum.
