London’s Oxford Street will be pedestrianized from Oct. 26

LIVERPOOL, England — A kilometer of London’s iconic Oxford Street will be pedestrianised next month, the capital’s mayor said Monday.
Speaking at the POLITICO Pub at Labour Party conference, Sadiq Khan announced parts of the road will be traffic free from Oct. 26 and said he believed this could help revive the popular shopping destination after challenges affected by the rise of online shopping.
“We’ll then spend some time trying to turn it into a really lovely pedestrianized street, which will lead to more retail, more leisure, more visitors, more tourism,” Khan told POLITICO, condemning the street’s previous “managed decline” which included “tat shops” that “really shouldn’t be there.”
The mayor, who has run London since 2016, highlighted the “massive increase in interest with good quality retail” since the initial announcement.
Tory Deputy Leader of Westminster City Council Tim Barnes warned that businesses “still have a long list of unanswered questions about how it will work,” including issues around access, air pollution, street cleaning and public safety.
