Over 145,000 Yemenis flee homes since June amid escalating conflict, UN says

GENEVA, September 28. /TASS/. More than 145,000 Yemenis have fled their homes since June as the armed conflict has escalated, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported.
The number rose by nearly 16,000 over the past week.
"More than 145,000 people have been displaced across eight governorates in Yemen since conflict escalated on the West Coast in June," the IOM said. "As of today, the total stands at 145,308 people," a rise of 15,870 from September 21 and an increase of more than 12% in one week. "Insecurity continues to uproot families along the West Coast and across the south," the agency notes.
Ta'iz Governorate has received the most displaced people: 81,444, or more than half the total. Its figure has risen by almost 8,000 in a week. Aden recorded the largest increase after Ta'iz. "With the situation remaining volatile, further displacement is possible in the coming days," the IOM said.
Armed conflict between the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces has continued in Yemen since August 2014. In early August 2026, the Ansar Allah movement launched an offensive in the country's southwest. It took control of the port city of Mokha and territory along the Bab al-Mandeb Strait in western Yemen on September 10-11. Government forces mounted several counterattacks near the strait in the following days.
