Russia completes fuel pump-out from shipwrecks in Black Sea

MOSCOW, September 25. /TASS/. Russia has completed fuel oil pumping-out from shipwrecks of Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers in the Black Sea, the government said on its website.
"Fuel oil pumping-out from sunken vessel parts was completed. Completion of activities was confirmed by an ad hoc commission comprising representatives of Rosprirodnazor [Russian environment protection regulator – TASS], the Ministry of Emergencies and the Marine Rescue Services. Sunken fragments of tankers will be lifted by authorized services and agencies in due course," the government said.
The water area and the shoreline along the exposed coast of the Krasnodar Region, Crimea and Sevastopol have been cleaned up to date. Over 185,000 metric tons of contaminated sand and soil were disposed.
Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers went to wreck on December 15, 2024. They carried over 9,200 metric tons of fuel oil. The oil spill occurred in the Black Sea as a result of the incident.
