Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was named as one of the victims of a Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of more than $35 million, a prosecutor in Missouri stated.
The prosecutor brought up Kelce’s name in court on Tuesday during the sentencing of 38-year-old Siddharth Jawahar, who received an 11-year prison term.
Jawahar had entered a guilty plea in January to three counts of wire fraud in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Missouri.
The court also ordered Jawahar to pay restitution totaling $31.35 million.
Local television station KMOV reported that while the prosecutor mentioned Kelce, no additional comments were provided regarding his involvement. It remains unclear when Kelce placed his money with the firm or the total amount he invested.
A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office detailed that Jawahar managed Swiftarc Capital LLC, a Texas-based investment firm that began accepting money from clients in 2015.
Jawahar directed all incoming capital into a single asset, which subsequently declined in value. Rather than disclosing the losses, he misled investors by claiming their funds were generating profits, using capital raised from newer investors to pay off earlier ones.
Furthermore, Jawahar diverted the client funds to bankroll what prosecutors described as “an extravagant lifestyle” featuring private jets, high-end residences, fine dining, and exclusive private club memberships.
According to the release, Jawahar collected over $35 million between July 2016 and December 2023, but actually invested roughly $10 million.
It’s unlikely that 36-year-old Kelce is the only professional athlete caught up in the fraudulent enterprise.
A 2021 profile in Forbes detailing the expanding financial portfolio of NBA guard Gary Harris featured several remarks from Harris regarding his investments, which included the Swiftarc Ventures Labs Fund.
Jawahar served as its co-founder and managing partner, and Harris shared how much knowledge he had gained from Jawahar.
That same Forbes article identified other athletes who had put money into the fund, highlighting Kelce alongside basketball players Mason Plumlee and Tim Hardaway Jr.
Data from Spotrac indicates that Kelce, Hardaway, and Harris each hold career earnings exceeding $111 million.
In July, Kelce tied the knot with pop star Taylor Swift, who held a net worth of $2.1 billion on their wedding day, according to Forbes.
