As the negative headlines piled up, Kimberly Guilfoyle switched into damage control mode in a doomed attempt to save her job as U.S. ambassador to Greece.

From Athens, she contacted Trump administration officials and conservative media, seeking to shore up her support. She claimed that one story had relied on AI-generated text messages. She even inquired about scrubbing another story from the internet, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Ultimately, her multi-pronged effort failed. Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and ex-fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., was ousted from her post Tuesday, marking a stunning fall from grace for a woman who nearly married into the first family.

“She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia told reporters after announcing that the president had asked Guilfoyle to resign.

In a statement afterward, the ambassador thanked Trump for the opportunity to serve and vowed to “vigorously” fight the “false” allegations against her, which her representatives had previously denied or downplayed.

Prior to her dismissal, Guilfoyle, 57, had been concerned about her job for weeks, the Journal reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. It began when the outlet reported late last month that the U.S. ambassador had been promoting a Greek construction firm, where one of her advisers served as a lobbyist.

After the story was published, Guilfoyle started calling influential Trump supporters and officials, asking them to back her up.

Then, on October 7, a second story was published. This one reported that the ambassador had asked a Trump donor to pay off her $100,000 American Express bill in the lead-up to her September 2025 Senate confirmation. “Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” she reportedly texted Eric Deters, asking him to wire the money in a way that would not leave a paper trail.

Afterward, Guilfoyle, the ex-wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, contacted the White House. Defending herself, she claimed that the text messages were not legitimate, but that they had been generated by artificial intelligence.

Officials didn’t buy it, the Journal reported.

Over the weekend, the newspaper published a third report about Guilfoyle that raised eyebrows.

The story alleged that — shortly after her Senate confirmation — the former Fox News host had “boasted about her close ties to two Greek tycoons and said they were bankrolling her high-rolling trips around the world.”

The mood in Athens then became tense. Guilfoyle watched television coverage of herself on mute. In an attempt to identify leakers, she started pointing fingers at her security team and embassy staff. She also contacted Matthew Boyle, Breitbart’s Washington bureau chief, and asked him to vouch for her with the Trump administration, the Journal reported.

She also attempted to squash a Daily Mail article, which indicated she never paid a $1,769 bill for dinner and Champagne. Earlier this month, she asked State Department officials if the article could be scrubbed from the internet.

But, when U.S. officials asked Guilfoyle whether she could prove the bill had been paid, she never provided a receipt.

Meanwhile, Trump officials had been discussing axing Guilfoyle since early October.

The president’s aides talked about cutting her loose when Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in Greece between October 6 and 8, the Journal reported. However, the secretary didn’t want such a move to upstage his speech on western civilization, which he delivered from the Acropolis in Athens. At the time, Rubio defended Guilfoyle, telling reporters: “You guys walk around thinking that because some source told you something and you reported it, it’s the gospel. It’s not the gospel.”

Trump himself had grown irritated at the shocking allegations against Guilfoyle, and he was bothered that she appeared to be profiting off his presidency. Some aides, meanwhile, worried about the optics surrounding Guilfoyle heading into the midterm elections.

Ultimately, Trump made the final call on Tuesday morning, telling Zacharia, the newly minted White House press secretary, that she should tell reporters he was requesting that Guilfoyle resign.

After the news broke, Guilfoyle posted a lengthy statement on social media, part of which addressed “false” claims against her.

“These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity,” she wrote. “I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional. I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service.”

Trump later distanced himself from the former Fox News star, telling reporters she “wasn’t a member of my family” and that she “dated my son a long time ago.”

Guilfoyle became engaged to Donald Trump Jr. in 2020, but the nuptials were called off after the president’s eldest son was spotted holding hands with Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson in September 2024. He married Anderson in May of this year. In December 2024, Trump announced his decision to nominate Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador.

“She went to Greece, she was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were reading,” Trump said on Tuesday.
