Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove part of his right lung, his doctors announced Tuesday.
Tests conducted during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected before the surgery, said Luigi Carbone, the pope’s personal doctor, and Stefano Margaritora, who led the surgical team, in a statement shared by the Vatican.
“The Holy Father was in the operating theatre for approximately three hours; the operation itself lasted about ninety minutes,” the doctors said. “The operation was successful and there were no complications.”
The Pope woke up normally after the procedure and returned to his room after a short period of observation, according to his physicians. He underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Leo announced Sunday that doctors had discovered a “small, localized nodule” in his lung during a recent medical check. At the time, the Vatican projected a recovery time of a week.
The 71-year-old pope is scheduled to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November, though it remains unclear whether the surgery will affect those plans.
The doctors’ statement did not specify the cancer’s stage or whether Leo will require further treatment.
