A 7-month-old girl was killed after a high-speed police chase involving a driver on a suspended license ended in a 10-car pileup in Georgia.
Georgia State Patrol troopers spotted an Audi sedan speeding 110 mph in a 60 mph zone on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County, north of Atlanta, Saturday night. The sedan had its headlights off and was weaving dangerously through traffic, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said.
As authorities tried to pull the car over, the driver stopped briefly on the shoulder before speeding away, prompting a police chase, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said.
The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Cameron Gabriel Kemp, sped eastbound on the interstate before losing control while trying to come off an exit.
Kemp’s vehicle hit the guardrail and collided with several other vehicles, causing a 10-car pileup. One of the cars was carrying three infants, and 7-month-old Kalayia Tolbert died from her injuries in hospital.

Investigators said that Kemp was driving on a suspended license and had active arrest warrants for a probation violation and failure to appear in court. He was previously incarcerated with the Georgia Department of Corrections for aggravated battery.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team responded to investigate the crash.
Authorities have not shared the status of the two other infants who were taken to the hospital after the crash. It was not immediately clear whether any of the other drivers or passengers involved in the pile-up were hospitalized. The Independent has contacted authorities in Georgia for more information.
The state’s Department of Public Safety extended its condolences to the family of the deceased infant.
“No traffic violation, attempted arrest, or enforcement action diminishes the tragedy of a child losing her life. Our responsibility now is to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this incident are thoroughly investigated while continuing to support those affected,” the agency wrote in a statement.
“Above all, we ask the public to keep Kalayia Tolbert’s family, and everyone impacted by this tragedy in their thoughts.”
