NEW YORK — Mayor Zohran Mamdani demanded President Donald Trump end “all ICE enforcement actions in our city” late Thursday after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in Manhattan, according to the NYPD.
Shortly after 4 p.m., ICE agents shot someone in the Marble Hill section of northern Manhattan, according to the police department and a social media post from the mayor, who condemned the incident and said he had reached out to Trump. Early reports said agents surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in a car before firing multiple rounds, according to the mayor.
“This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” the mayor wrote on X. “I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.”
The White House and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately return requests for comment. Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec said the mayor had not been able to reach the president as of 8 p.m. Thursday.
The man, whose identity and immigration status was not immediately known, was struck in the neck, according to a person with knowledge of the incident who was granted anonymity to discuss it.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital by NYPD officers and was conscious as of Thursday evening, according to an NYPD spokesperson. The mayor noted in his social media post that the child appeared to be unharmed.
The NYPD spokesperson said the injured man was in stable condition Thursday evening.
The mayor used the incident to reiterate his call for the federal immigration agency to be disbanded altogether.
“Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery,” Mamdani wrote. “Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children. Abolish ICE.”
The mayor’s demand comes after he and Trump met at New York City’s Gracie Mansion last month. After the private meeting — their third — they came out for a press conference where they praised each other, continuing the shockingly cordial relationship they’ve enjoyed since Mamdani became mayor despite their deep ideological differences.
“I want what’s good for New York. I want what’s good for the country. So if I had a choice of having him be a bad mayor or a horrible mayor — I don’t want that,” Trump said, standing alongside Mamdani on the lawn of Gracie Mansion. “I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential, got great potential.”
The shooting comes amid heightened tensions about immigration enforcement in New York City. As Gothamist recently reported, agents have dramatically increased arrests in New York — with a particular focus on the five boroughs — even as they have avoided some of the more high-profile raids that have garnered headlines elsewhere in the country. And in recent days, local officials urged property owners to deny ICE the usage of a parking lot near the site of the shooting as a staging ground.
