A Brooklyn man was killed in a freak accident after his bag got stuck in a subway train door in New York City, according to police.
Police said 57-year-old Yaw Boahene was stepping off a train at a subway station in Brooklyn at approximately 6 p.m. on Monday when a shopping bag he was holding got trapped in the door.
Boahene was pulled onto the tracks and run over by the train as it left the station, police said in a statement.
Responding officers found Boahene on the tracks “unconscious and unresponsive,” according to a police statement. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
An official cause of death will be established by the medical examiner’s office as police continue their inquiry into the incident.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city transit network, directed all inquiries regarding the fatality to the police department.
Fatal dragging incidents occur periodically across the nation’s largest subway system.
In 2022, a 20-year-old passenger died at upper Manhattan’s Columbus Circle station after a piece of his clothing or his backpack caught in a train door as he attempted to board.
