Labour to Nationalise Avanti West Coast Trains After Privatisation Fails

The Avanti West Coast train service will be nationalised in March 2027, Labour has announced, following years of poor service caused by privatisation.
The service is the latest of numerous lines that have either been brought back into public ownership or will be soon, following a pledge by the ruling party to do so ahead of the 2024 election.
“Enough is enough. For years, people have been expected to put up with Avanti’s cancellations, delays, overcrowding and a service that has failed them time and time again,” prime minister Andy Burnham said in a statement on Sunday.
Re-nationalising the service “means passengers, not shareholders, will come first,” he added. “More investment, fewer delays and a renewed focus on getting the basics right. We’re putting essential services back in public hands and building a railway that actually works for the people who use it.”
Avanti runs services to destinations including London, Manchester, Blackpool, Edinburgh and Birmingham.
The office of transport secretary Heidi Alexander said in a statement : “From 7 March 2027, taxpayers will no longer be paying fees to a private operator. Instead, every penny will be spent for the benefit of passengers.”
Several operators have been nationalised since 2025, including South Western Railway, Greater Anglia, Govia Thameslink Railway and Chiltern Railways.
The privatisation of the UK’s rail services began in the early 1990s, when parliament passed a bill allowing for British Rail to be broken up and sold off to multiple private firms.
Critics argue this drove up prices while making the service worse, with companies incentivised to maximise revenues while slashing costs.
By 2024, the UK had the most expensive train fares in Europe, according to one study. Meanwhile shareholders have collected £14bn in dividends alone from privatised rail services, figures from campaign group Common Wealth show.
