EU works on security protocol similar to Article 4 of NATO Treaty — FT

LONDON, September 28. /TASS/. EU defense ministers are set to discuss a European Commission proposal on Monday to create a new security protocol similar to Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, the Financial Times (FT) reports.

According to the daily, the mechanism is intended to be invoked in the event of attacks on EU countries and would facilitate the coordination of response measures. Article 4 of the NATO Treaty is likewise activated if an ally considers its security to be under threat.

However, the FT reports that a number of European diplomats harbor doubts regarding the new protocol's potential functions. They also fear that the mechanism could compete with NATO processes and create redundant decision-making channels.
