Hong Kong tourism authorities have cut short the opening hours of a lantern display at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay out of public safety concerns after large crowds flocked there to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.
“In light of the large number of visitors and in the interest of public safety and order, entry queues of the ‘World Lantern Boulevard’ will be closed shortly,” the Hong Kong Tourism Board said at around 9pm on Friday.
“All lantern installations at the International Lantern Spectacular will remain on display until October 4. Members of the public and visitors are encouraged to visit at an alternative time.”
The display, which opened on September 17, has been extended by a week to October 4 due to overwhelming public interest. The daily lighting-up time is between 6.30pm and 11pm, although the hours were originally extended to midnight between Thursday and Saturday.
