Trump to talk AI with Xi at White House, but wants to ‘leave it exactly where it is’

President Donald Trump said that he would discuss artificial intelligence during his White House confab with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday but added that he isn’t looking to make major changes to how the rapidly developing technology is regulated.
“Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is,” he wrote Thursday morning on Truth Social, using the name he has directed the U.S. government to rebrand AI with. “That is China’s position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ!”
The president has pushed back on calls to clamp down on the industry in recent weeks, as fears over AI’s destructive capability have multiplied after the resignation of an Anthropic researcher and a spate of high-profile security breaches. Even some of the industry’s top corporate leaders have said a slowdown in the technology might be warranted.
Trump, however, has panned concerns about AI as a “hoax” perpetuated by “Radical Left Democrats,” designed to help China.
“There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China,” he wrote on Truth Social earlier this month. “WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so.”
Trump also appeared to dismiss the prospect of any global coordination on AI governance in an address before the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday. He told the audience of dignitaries that the “United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control” the technology and described AI as “amazing.”
Ahead of Trump’s meeting with Xi, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that he and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng are working on a “notification mechanism” between the two countries should an AI threat with national security implications emerge. And on Saturday, the president announced he was creating an “AI Force” to screen for “BAD” across the industry.
