Russia hopes new UN chief to launch arbitration over US violations

MOSCOW, September 23. /TASS/. Russia hopes the next UN secretary-general will launch arbitration over violations by the United States as the host country of the world organization's headquarters, Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department of International Organizations, said in an interview with TASS.

"The Secretariat headed by [UN Secretary-General] Antonio Guterres has effectively acknowledged its inability to perform its functions of ensuring normal working conditions for permanent missions to the UN. Naturally, we will continue to insist that this issue be resolved as soon as possible, and we hope the new secretary-general will launch the arbitration procedure and, in general, carry out their duties fully and faithfully in accordance with the UN Charter," the diplomat said, answering a question ahead of the Russian delegation's participation in the UN General Assembly high-level week under Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"We would not like to hear excuses from the future head of the Secretariat in the same vein as Guterres: 'We could do this, but why?'" Logvinov added.

Antonio Guterres, who has headed the UN since 2017, will complete his term on December 31, 2026. Members of the Security Council select a candidate to recommend for the post of UN chief. The General Assembly then votes to formally appoint the new UN secretary-general.
