Nayan Seth in Washington Published: 10:34pm, 20 Sep 2026 US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer held their final preparatory talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York on Sunday to work out deliverables for next week’s summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Washington.
The leaders discussed possible economic outcomes for the summit and held their long-awaited dialogue on artificial intelligence safety and governance.
The latest meeting mirrored those in May, when Bessent and He held talks in Seoul just days before Trump met Xi in Beijing .

Last week, the South China Morning Post reported that Washington and Beijing would fold AI discussions into a broader economic meeting.
